ELECTRIC DEPARTMENT

The Sturgis Electric Department is comprised of four divisions: the Meter Division, Generation Division, Line Division, and Administration. The Electric Department has served the Sturgis area since 1896. The Hydroelectric Dam was constructed on the St. Joseph River in 1911. The dam is located about 2 miles north of Centreville and is still used today to generate electricity. The Department also operates a diesel generating plant. Combined with the hydro, the Department can generate 10% of the needed electrical power. The balance is purchased from American Electric Power (AEP).

SERVICE

The purchased power, in combination with the Department's generation, results in very competitive electric rates. Operation of the facilities also provides homes, businesses, farms, social services, and local government agencies with reliable, efficient, and cost-effective electricity. This trend has nurtured local commerce and helped create a great community.

CUSTOMER SERVICE
The Electric Department has earned a reputation of delivering quality service, with high reliability at competitive electric rates. This quality service is evident in the Customer Service Department located next to the Clerk's Office in City Hall. They are ready to assist customers with service requests and to answer billing questions. They can be reached at (269) 659 - 7254.

COMMUNITY COMMITMENT
The Electric Department is a valuable asset for the City of Sturgis. As a not-for-profit entity, electric rates cover operating costs and capital improvements. The rates do not have to earn a return for investors and shareholders.

The utility is locally owned and controlled. Policies and rates are set by the Sturgis City Commission.

The workforce is made up of individuals who live in the community. They want a system that meets the needs and expectations of their customers and neighbors.

Even though the utility does not pay taxes, a payment in lieu of taxes is made to the City's General Fund. This payment keeps the Sturgis property tax rate one of the lowest in the region.

DIRECT PAYMENT NOW AVAILABLE!

The City is pleased to offer a pre-authorized, Direct Payment. Customers no longer have to write checks or buy stamps to mail payments to the City for electric and water/sewer bills. The City will continue to send statements each month, but these will simply advise those customers who choose Direct Payment of the date of the charge and the amount. This is one way to improve customer service. The system is proven, safe and reliable. Customers who choose Direct Payment will be notified by statement approximately 10 days before each charge goes through. Send a completed form to: Customer Service, 130 N. Nottawa, Sturgis, MI  49091.
